On The Turntable In 1958: 'Chantilly Lace' - Big Bopper
One of my most favorite songs but strangely enough I do not have this on an old scratchy 45rpm record. I do have it on a CD compilation, and also a recording by a local band that is even better than the Bopper's original, probably because it reminds me so much of my Sweetie.

Top Product of 1958: Kitchens were smelling a lot cleaner thanks to the introduction of Mr. Clean in 1958. In 1998 People Magazine called Mr. Clean "one of the sexiest men alive." Sweetie says she doesn't agree, she thinks that I am. She knows how to keep me wrapped around her little finger.

I have previously posted two photos of this 1958 Plymouth Fury Golden Commando, [link] and [link] At the Mopars North of the Gate car show in 2010 I had a chance to photograph this fine example of Mopar history again, so please consider this as a continuation of my original posts.

Although there are several flaws this is a beautiful car. It was built in the Los Angeles factory on April 8, 1958 and stayed in LA for over 50 years with the original owner. It was sold and the car moved to Northern CA in 2008. Only 5,303 examples were built in 1958 and this car is production # 3,064. Today it has only 46,000 miles. But Sweetie looked at the engine and decided she was driving it on our virtual Road Trip of the Day. Where are we going, you might ask?. Well, I asked and Sweetie said that we would make a high speed trip to LA so the car could visit its original home. Even in car-jaded LA, this car would turn heads - at least while Sweetie is driving it. Who wouldn't check out this car while being driven by a gorgeous blonde?!

One thing I would change if this car were mine is the chrome wheels. I remember those days very clearly and chrome wheels were generally used on hot rods and not production cars and to my eye they look out of place. Also in 1958 we still had wide whitewalls. The first car to use the narrow whites as standard equipment was the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham but it wasn't until 1962 that the narrow band took over as the standard whitewall on new cars.

The 2 door hardtop style is fabulous, makes the car look sleek and hot, and the fins (for high speed stability on our road trip to LA!) complete the line perfectly. Try to imagine this car without fins - does not compute.

Full view for sleekness!

This is the same car a decade later. I still kept her chrome wheels and have three of her hub caps but I think she looks great with the new white walls and all restored to perfection. Notice spears and bumper flares.
